Put on nanomaterials, basalt can also conduct electricity

The story of "stone gold" has become a reality in the laboratory of the XinJiang Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry Chinese Academy of Sciences. The researchers use insulation basalt fiber as the base, using chemical vapor deposition technology, realized the different nano carbon material deposite and growth on the surface of the basalt fiber, which makes it a conductor.

The experiment was conducted in collaboration with the institute of XinJiang Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Leibniz Polymer institute in Dresden, Germany.The results of the study are published in the journal composite materials A: applied science and manufacturing.

Basalt fiber is a kind of fibrous material which is made from basaltic rock.Because of the outstanding performance in strength, temperature range, production cost, corrosion resistance and environmental protection, etc, are widely used in filtering materials, building materials, fiber reinforced composite materials, and other fields.

Under the support of the national natural science foundation,national "one thousand project" and china-germany partnership (PPP),Chinese and German team try to use basalt fiber to realize different nano carbon materials deposite and growth on the surface of the basalt.

Ma pengcheng, a researcher at the XinJiang Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that the results of this study subvert the concept of traditional basalt fiber as insulating material, and realize the production of conductive basalt fiber. It is expected to increase the function value of basalt fiber, further expand its application field and increase the added value of products.

Besides, through a series of research for the production of conductive basalt fiber, a kind of new technologies to realize hierarchical structure fiber material production has found , can be adjusted the interface strength of the composites, and strengthen the fiber strength.
